Celebration of My 2nd Granddaughter's “Coming-of-Age Day".

2007年1月8日成人の日に、我が愛娘の次女即ち孫娘が成人式を迎えました。

成人の日が国民の祝日の一つであることは言わずもがなですが、1999年までは毎年1月15日が成人の日でした。ある辞典によると、成人の日を1月15日としたのは、この日が小正月（旧暦の1月15日即ち満月の日）であり、かつて元服の儀が小正月に行われていたことによるといわれています。然しながらハッピーマンデー制度導入に伴い、2000年からは成人の日が毎年1月の第2月曜日に変更されました。
国民の祝日に関する法律（祝日法）では「おとなになったことを自覚し、みずから生き抜こうとする青年を祝い励ます」ことを趣旨としています。

この日には、各市区町村では居住地の新成人を招いて成人式を行なっています。

私の２番目の孫娘も住居地の市役所の成人式に招待され、祝賀をされるとともに小・中学生時代の旧友との再会を楽しみました。

私達は家族全員（彼女の両親、兄と姉、そして両親の関係の祖父母）で当人の成人を祝福し、祝賀の晩餐会を催し、両親と祖父母の心づくしの料理に舌鼓を打ち、大いに語らい励まし有意義なひと時を過ごすことが出来ました。参考までにその時に撮った写真を何枚かご披露します。ちなみに、ご当人は現在ある大学の2年生で、今夏米国留学を予定しています。

My beloved granddaughter Tomo, celebrated her "Coming-of-Age Day", January 8, 2007.

The "Coming-of-Age Day" was on January 15th every year until 1999.  It is a national holiday.  It was set as January 15th (Japanese old calendar, i.e., moon calendar) because of the full moon. However, it was changed in the year 2000 to the second Monday in January every year along with the introduction of “Happy Mondays” (a system to increase the number of national holidays).

The purpose of the "Coming-of-Age Day" is to celebrate and encourage young people who are serious about becoming responsible adults.  The city government of each town and village holds a celebration ceremony and invites the new adults to attend.

My granddaughter Tomo was invited to the ceremony by the city office in her district. She enjoyed the reunion with old friends from her primary school and junior high school.  Our family, (her parents, brother, sister, and grandparents) blessed her as she became an adult. We had a wonderful time at a dinner party celebration. The family brought food cooked from home and it was delicious.  We enjoyed our time talking with Tomo and encouraged her. Some of the pictures taken that day are below. She is in her second year at the University and is scheduled to study in the United States beginning this summer.
